A Brief Introduction to Soweto

Soweto (meaning South Western Townships) is a 'city within a city', being part of Greater Johannesburg. Soweto is actually more than 100 years old and celebrated its centenary in 2004. Originally known as Klipspruit (stony stream in Afrikaans), Soweto was a labour reserve to house black workers from the growing mining industry away from white Johannesburg. Over the 100 years Soweto has been an important part of South Africa's move to democracy. In the 1970's a shining example of apartheid planning, Soweto became the thorn in the National Party's side, exploding in the Soweto riots of 1976.
